What is meditation?
Where and when
So meditation can include any activity where your mind and body are focused pleasurably just on one thing. When you are cooking, gardening, writing a report on your computer or listening to music note by note with all else faded into the background, you are meditating. Kevin Hume can teach you how to do this in a structured and disciplined way so you can use meditation at any time throughout your busy day to relax the body and calm the mind.
Whether by meditating on the breath or a beautiful object, on sensations in your body or on images of those whom you love, repeating a phrase of words or focusing on a red traffic light when paused in traffic, meditation in essence is simply about finding a means of focus and keeping with it as long as you need to produce the relaxing, calming and clearing effects you desire. But it helps to have a teacher as with learning any skill. Kevin Hume can personally teach you the tricks to staying focused in your workplace or his Sydney meditation studio in one-on-one sessions or small group classes tailored to your particular needs. Or you can learn as you go with his individually-available CDs or three CD set with Companion Guide explaining the finer points to the practice. (See Fantastic CDs for You)
You don't need to sit cross-legged on the floor for hours at a time - though you can if you find this fun! Instead you can meditate in the shower for five minutes in the morning or for two minutes caught at the traffic lights or while out walking or at the beach watching the waves. Short meditations throughout your busy day are better than nothing and can be very effective in quickly helping you de-stress and lighten up. Fifteen to twenty minutes morning and evening seated in a comfortable upright chair away from phone of family noise and distractions is ideal but not always possible. The more you meditate the easier it becomes and the more evident the benefits to you.
Learning meditation is like learning anything new. Did you ever forget how to ride a bike? Or forgotten how to swim once that technique was learnt and practiced? Meditation is like swimming lesson for the mind. It's that easy. Once learnt, it's a skill you won't ever forget.
You can meditate alone or with your friends or even workmates. It's a skill you can take away with you on holiday or incorporate into your working world.
‘Not only do I understand better why meditation is so beneficial, but now I have a clearer idea of how to encourage others to meditate also. Very good course structure. Kevin's presentation flowed well from one technique to the next. Very clear about the practical applications to everyday life.'
